February 23, 1893An article is published telling the story of the 300-year-old oak tree that was the source of "Viking’s" mast-fish. Its sale and removal sparked a domestic argument between the owner (a former seaman) and his wife. She thought felling such a majestic tree–growing in the midst of a potato field–would be a great loss to their farm. He felt it was a great honor for it to become part of the Viking ship and would surely bring them good luck; and besides, they were being very well paid!
